Why a Location Recce is Essential Before Your Wedding Day

As a wedding photographer, preparation is everything—and one of the most valuable steps I take before your big day is a location recce. It might sound technical, but it’s simply a visit to your wedding venue ahead of time to scout out the best photography spots.

Why is it important? First, every venue has its quirks. From lighting conditions to layout, there are countless factors that affect how and where I shoot. A location recce helps me identify ideal backdrops for portraits, figure out the direction and quality of natural light at different times of day, and plan for any logistical challenges—like limited space or awkward angles.

Fo this wedding for example, the ceremony was at Portsmouth registery office and the reception was at a village hall in Gosport. Both venues did not make great locations for dedicated photos of the bride and groom so I took them to Portsmouth Harbour where the settings were more attractive.

It’s also a chance to explore creative possibilities. There were beautiful old buildings and walkways and scenic views of sea. By visiting the venue in advance, I can ensure no opportunity goes unnoticed.
